Original shutters, working again
Many older homes still have their original folding internal shutters, hidden in the window reveals – often painted shut for decades. Brought back into use, they are wonderful: they keep rooms noticeably warmer on winter nights, block light better than curtains and add real character. We repair and restore traditional window shutters across Larbert, Stenhousemuir and the Falkirk area.
What we do
- Free painted-shut shutters – carefully, without damaging the panels or the surrounding woodwork.
- Repair damaged leaves – split panels, loose joints and broken edges.
- Replace missing leaves – made to match the originals.
- Hinges and ironmongery – new or restored hinges, shutter bars and catches.
- Adjust and re-hang – so the shutters fold neatly back into their boxes and close evenly across the window.
Why it is worth doing
Closed shutters create an insulating layer of air in front of the glass, cutting heat loss through the window at night. They also add privacy and security, and they are part of the original design of the house.
Working alongside other improvements
Shutters work well with draught-proofed and restored sash windows. If you are also considering secondary glazing, we plan it so the shutters can still open and close.
